We endeavored to work with the existing building's layout, minimising demolition or extension in order to incorporate all the living areas expected of a modern house.
As a result, two distinctly characterful dwellings have emerged through careful design. Where alteration was required, a toilet block has been removed to allow a new contemporary entrance to the smaller East house, where the larger West house benefited from improving the existing school entrance.
The most significant modifications internally are the strengthening of the roof trusses to enable a new first floor to be added to both houses. This almost doubles the floor area, allowing bedrooms on upper floors with large open plan living areas at ground level. The high, school windows are utilised to maximise daylight into the double height kitchen, dining and circulation areas.
